From March 10 to 14, 2025, the Workshop on Harmonization and Standardization of Sampling, Toxin Analysis, and Quality Control Protocols for the Monitoring of Algae and Marine Toxins took place in Varadero, Cuba. The event was organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under the framework of Project INT7022.

The workshop brought together experts from 20 countries and members of the REMARCO-RLA7028 network to address key challenges in monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and marine biotoxins. Representing Ecuador was Biologist David Eloy García Asencio, M.Sc., a researcher from the Public Research Institute of Aquaculture and Fisheries (IPIAP), who presented the country’s current capabilities in HAB monitoring, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement in laboratory infrastructure and molecular biotoxin analysis.

As a result of the workshop, participants committed to implementing international sampling protocols, enhancing laboratory capacities with new technologies, and continuing specialized training in biotoxin analysis.

Additionally, a meeting between ESPOL and IPIAP was held to share the knowledge gained in Cuba and to discuss joint strategies for improving HAB monitoring in Ecuador—ensuring public health, food safety, and the sustainability of marine ecosystems.
