Ph. D. Marco Alvarez, representing the School of Maritime Engineering and Marine Sciences (FIMCM), participated in the Workshop on the Jurisdictional Initiative for Farmed Shrimp, a key space for discussion on the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Gulf of Guayaquil.

Also present at the event, representing ESPOL, were Mrs. María Yagual, president of the Bellavista community, and Mr. Félix Domínguez, shrimp farmer from the same community. Both have been key players in the Shrimp Farming Project 2019-2024, a linkage initiative that seeks to strengthen community shrimp production through responsible and sustainable practices.

Dr. Marco Alvarez, former director of this linkage project between the Bellavista commune and FIMCM, highlighted the importance of cooperation between academia, producers and local communities to ensure efficient and environmentally responsible aquaculture development. He also emphasized the role of ESPOL in the generation of technical knowledge and the implementation of innovative strategies to strengthen the shrimp sector.

The workshop allowed for the exchange of experiences and knowledge among researchers, producers and community leaders, reaffirming the commitment of FIMCM and ESPOL to the development of sustainable and resilient aquaculture in the region.
